I suppose that I should feel guilty for the short piece today. I am trying to discipline myself in turning out two essays a week, each approximately 1,000 words, but today’s piece will be marked as “incomplete” in the grade book, with an apology instead of words.
The reason being is that yesterday was a holiday weekend for a certain flavor of American which is my demographic. It is the day that the Football season began (Which is American Football; soccer as “football” is never, ever capitalized in the grammar used by your humble correspondent).
This is all coupled during the weekend with the Serbian Orthodox Church across the street having its annual festival and there is some fine food to be had less than 100 yards from my front door (read here chevapi, goulash, and some amazing sour cabbage rolls) all to be washed down with Nisko beer.
Sunday was spent in a fashion that is only appropriate for around 30 days a year. I will be sitting in a chair and mindlessly watching a fairly stupid game that was a major contributor to the unpleasant fact of my being semi-crippled in my old age. But I still love the game and cherish the time I can just be mindless and enjoy the game.
The Serbian Festival and the food is just a great addition to the tradition. My family comes from the Sud Tyrol (which is about the same distance to Serbia that I drive to get back to Utah) so the accordion music and the polka-esque music blaring is oddly comforting.
So as usual, I gave that Church the money that I would spend at a sports bar and had a much better time.
Money very well spent.
