Boundaries

I was kinda surprised when I checked in on the comments that I made over at JMG’s place. Not at the response to the comments, those are accepted over there (the protocol here is to publish without response, I tend to get caught up with internet bickering and so that is how I set my boundaries. If I want to argue, I send e-mails).
Back to the point...I am quite surprised at this subsect of the hippie-dippie movement that is interested in machinery and application of mundane technology to do stuff that seems more in the realm of “brain/spirit only” work. I suppose that it has a lineage, alchemy being sort of the same thing as an application of what is now referred to as chemistry to do stuff that just makes people happy and doesn’t turn a dime. (Gee, I wonder why that got shouted down)
I think that the most interesting part of this is not that I have any particular belief that the technologies used are particularly valid and useful, It is just that they seem to have been discarded along the way for the simple reason that the smart people couldn’t figure out what was causing the effect so they decided that the effect must be a fraud and need be shouted down. Because everyone knows that if we don’t understand something, it must not really be there.
I spent a bit of time yesterday after consuming a gummi bear or three perusing the links so graciously provided by the folks over on the thread. I have always been a fan of Steampunk and Dieselpunk and the really cool things that I saw as examples of the technologies would fit right into that genre.
I will have to be careful as I approach the recherches into these processes. Because of the esthetic fondness I have for things past, my ability to accurately judge the technologies investigated will be contaminated by the opposite of what the FDA and the opponents of Reich’s work did. They said that the effect didn’t exist because they couldn’t measure it. If I am not careful, I could fall into the trap of saying the effect is there because I wish it to be so.
So, right now I need to do some reading of the original works. Apparently, the FDA wasn’t fully diligent in burning the writings of Herr Doktor Reich (as an aside, one of my first questions is just how fair of an evaluation did his works get in the 1940’s when the author is a recent immigrant from Germany with a last name of Reich?)
So, gonna spend a half hour a day for the next month or so just figuring out what he was trying to do. I know this sounds simple, but a lot of folks get balled up at the hypothesis stage. I think that it sounds like a scientist looking into things spiritual, and there is nothing that pisses off hard-core science types more.
