Impressionism / Sever Burada/ The Way Home

I realize that this particular little blog is a convenience.  It is pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things.  Cost, all things considered is around $1.50/day all things taken into consideration (Power, internet bills, depreciation of computers, etc).  For some reason that I don’t understand, I feel a certain need to have someone else read what I have written.

Keith is checking out the internet alternatives out there.  Might be a good idea, might not, I am not certain at this point.  The main point of speed and a separate “place” outside the internet might be an assumption too far.  Gopherspace and it’s new competitor Geminispace kinda look like what they are:  the pre-web-browser.  These “spaces” hearken back to the days when the internet wasn’t just a marketing convenience.

But the internet itself now is changed from the day when such things were fashionable.  The wires that the internet rides and the server farms that power the space where we buy our shit and formulate our conspiracy theories are all owned by big companies wanting a return on their investment.

Nope, until the internet actually breaks down (and it most certainly will at some point), the nostalgia for a simple internet will only be done in the hinterlands of the network.  These will provide some people respite from the ceaseless advertising, but they will not replace the overall functions of the internet.  Worse yet, when the internet breaks down, they will break down as well.

Now this isn’t a screed telling folks what to do or why it is a bad idea (because it isn’t).  What this piece is all about is looking at the communication and control medium that the internet has become.  My only problem with geminispace and gopherspace is that the internet will absorb them and any breakdown in the physical layer of the internet will disrupt them just as badly
