Elizabeth Thompson: The Remnants of an Army

Good weekend:  Spent some good time with folks and got out plenty.  I do have to keep making an effort to not be a recluse.  Actually met socially with folks and just chatted.

Texting is the new thing.  Well, to me anyway.  Seems to me a kind of a stilted way to keep in contact with folks.  More a way to keep at arms length than to actually interact.  I prefer talking to people, but communication is what people allow, so I had better get used to the idea of people using texting as a means to control the closeness/distance of their relationships.

I think that texting is symptomatic of the need people have to fully control their lives.  People like me, who feel that sense of control is a chimera are kind of at wits ends.  I think that folks in America today see relationships as a transaction, where relationships need and must have a 1:1 correspondence of effort and importance between the two parties.  I can't for the life of me figure out where this silly-ass idea came from.  It rates right up there with the idea that all children are good.
