The general population of the US deserved Reagan/Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama/Trump/Biden, I would argue that this streak of seven shitty presidents is the weakest and most venal run of shitty presidents that the country has ever experienced.
The overall quality of the congress is abysmal. It has never been that good. I would rate this congress as around the 40th percentile in the “shittiness” scale with zero being maximally shitty and ten being actually good. I figure that in the 246 years since we threw out the fucking british trash, the current congress is below average but not as bad as it could be.
The US is in inexorable decline. The quality of the people we choose to lead us is an indicator of this decline.
The current political struggle in the US is four different groups of people who are attempting to maintain and/or enhance their perceived privileges.
Privilege is a zero-sum game. If you have it, someone else doesn’t
The four groups are
The hard right crazies who will do anything to enhance their set of privileges are approximately 20% of the general population, approximately 40% of the Republicans.
The hard left crazies who will do anything to enhance their set of privileges are approximately 20% of the general population, approximately 40% of the Democrats.
The folks who have decided that the current set of privileges are adequate for the purpose right now. They just wish that folks would stop arguing. These folks are about 55% of the general population and are probably evenly split in their supposed “party preference”. Most of them have given up on the political process completely and don’t bother to vote.
There are around 5% of the population that are “third party”. The rest of the population spend a lot of effort dismissing them as irrelevant. That is because they are.
Simply put, I am just watching a fuse burn. I don’t get to see how much fuse between the fire and the bomb. I just see it burning.
