I am sad that I didn’t get one of my “sweet” night’s sleep again like last night.  Nine uninterrupted hours are rare gifts for a man my age, but I can hope.

Had a long conversation with an old friend last night.  As always of late the conversation centered around Rona and politics.  But I noticed a difference from our previous discussions over the past conversations.  This one was further along the line of the Kubler-Ross continuum than previous conversations.

I realize that the psych-types have kinda backed away from this model (per wikipedia:  Although commonly referenced in popular culture, studies have not empirically demonstrated the existence of these stages, and the model is considered to be outdated, inaccurate,[1] and unhelpful in explaining the grieving process.) and considering the complete failure of the pseudoscience of psychology, it is my feeling that when talking about how folks deal with change, there really isn’t a better rough road map than Elisabeth’s model.

I think that we seem to be in the middle of the depression portion and are moving into the experiment/decision process that is conveniently omitted from the original five stages.  But we are at least moving toward an acceptance of the possibility of a new world.

Us geezers have known for a long time that the world that we created for our comfort was a house of cards.  We talked our way around it for a long time, but the three generations behind us see the problem more clearly than we do.  They are making provisions away from the way we do things.  The world is changing and us geezers are doing our level best to keep them from changing.

But we won’t succeed in our quest.  The base conditions that we helped to create militate against our being able to keep things the way that we like it.  All of the problems that we helped to create since we started throwing our weight around are still there, growing in size and intensity every day that we dawdle, trying to protect our “stuff”.

New things are a’ coming.  Changes are going to occur and a lot of folks aren’t going to be pleased.  A lot of applecarts are going to be upset.  The problems of overpopulation, environmental degradation, and the awful consequences of globalism/financialization are going to be dealt with one way or the other.

As a friend of mine says, you are going to have to tend your own garden.  You will need to develop your alliances and yourself and be as self-contained as you can be.

You always own the option of having no opinion. There is never any need to get worked up or to trouble your soul about things you can't control. These things are not asking to be judged by you. Leave them alone.
